Online Educational Support

Our Certified Teachers provide educational supports and strategies for every child

Remediation

When a child is expected to have a solid understanding of material but has not yet mastered it, they may need remediation. Remediation allows us to focus on specific areas of learning and “close the gaps” through focused and targeted teaching.

Enrichment

Many children are not succeeding to their full potential because they are bored, not interested in the material, or are simply not being challenged enough. We offer individualized teaching for kids who are looking to be challenged, or who want to explore a particular subject in more depth.

Homework Support

Homework can be stressful and exhausting for families and children alike. Our teachers help students who are struggling to complete homework, who need help understating the material, and who require strategies and support with assignments.

Traditional Tutoring

Many kids are doing just fine, but they need a little extra support and practice. Our Certified teachers work with kids who need an extra boost, help studying, help with test prep, and have questions about the material they are working on in the classroom.

Academic Assessment

Academic assessments based on benchmarks can help us identify any areas of academic inconsistencies. If a child is underachieving, we then look deeper to identify specific areas the child might benefit from support or remediation.

Advocacy and Parent Support

Advocating for your child’s needs can be stressful and exhausting, especially when navigating the school system. We are here to help you and your child as you navigate their learning journey. Our Approach

Holistic

A holistic approach to education seeks to fully utilize and acknowledge all aspects of an individual, to facilitate learning. This means that a child’s intellect, emotions, imagination, interests, strengths, and kinetic needs are all honored and utilized to maximize learning.

Psychologically Safe Environment

Psychological safety means that an individual can be themselves without fear of judgment or negative response. At Helix, we respect our students and accept them for who they are without judgment. Our students are free to be themselves regardless of their learning needs, sexual orientation, gender identity, race or religion.

Flexible Teaching Strategies

Not every strategy works for every student. In fact, what has worked for a child in the past may not work for them in the future. Our teachers are continually adapting to the needs of the student. They are not afraid to get creative, think differently, and try new approaches when engaging in lessons and activities with our students.

Trained and Certified Teachers

Our certified teachers utilize a wide range of teaching strategies. Whether your child is gifted, delayed, on the Spectrum, diagnosed with a learning disability, ADHD, or simply a unique learner, our teachers have the skills and experience to help your child learn and succeed in a positive and fun environment.

Benefits

Students Develop a Positive Relationship with Learning
Many non-traditional learners find school difficult and stressful.  We seek to change that association.  At Helix, learning is fun and engaging and catered to the interests and abilities of each child.
Customized Programming
Our teachers create customized lessons and activities that follow and support the provincial curriculum.  The same material may be presented 5 different ways to five different kids, depending on the student’s learning style and interests.
Comprehensive Support
For kids with complex learning needs we have a network of specialists to help support your child. Whether your child needs support in language pathology, Occupational therapy, behavioral consultation, managing anxiety, or special education, we are here to help build a plan that will address your child’s barriers to education.
Your Child will Build Solid Foundational Skills.
Foundational skills are the skills that future learning is based upon. Students with a strong foundation have the knowledge and skills to make learning easier and more meaningful in the future.
Confidence Building
At Helix, we believe every child can learn. It is crucial that students believe in themselves and know that they are capable. We seek to build up every student and set them up for success so that they are prepared to conquer and work through future academic challenges.

Heather Connor

When her children developed complex and mysterious medical symptoms, she gave up her career as a Territory Manager for a surgical device company to focus on getting them a diagnosis and treatment.  After her boy’s diagnosis of dystonia, a rare neurological movement disorder, Heather began her journey as an advocate.

In 2014, she started integrating writing into her advocacy work. Her personal essays and short stories can be found in numerous publications such as The Huffington Post, ScaryMommy, The Mighty, Kidsspot and more.  In 2016, Heather joined the Board of Directors of the Canadian Dystonia Medical Research Foundations where she served four years.  When one of her sons was diagnosed with autism and the other with learning disabilities, Heather’s advocacy work expanded into the world of education. Now as a founder at Helix Learning she loves working with students, families and professionals to support and advocate for all children’s right to learn.

— ABOUT

Helix Origin

The relationship between Heather and Jared began before they even met.  It started when Heather, who was volunteering at her kids’ school, watched from the hallway as Jared wedged himself under a tiny table.  Curled up beneath it was her overwhelmed 6 year old son who was scared and hiding.  Jared had been sent in by the school administration to help and see if he could get the little boy to engage in learning.  The bond they formed was instant and life changing.

— WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Why Helix?

In nature, obstacles do not impede growth.  Plant roots twist and coil until they find an unobstructed path.  Above ground, vines and creeping plants grow in circles around anything in their way. This helical growth pattern creates strength and stability for the plant, allowing it to grow far beyond what would have otherwise been possible.  This is an important analogy for learning and encompasses how we feel about education.  Learning does not need to take a linear path. Sometimes a different way needs to be found in order for children to navigate obstacles so they can succeed and grow. In the end, new paths can produce stronger results and higher achievement. — What’s in a name?
