Online Educational Support

Our certified teachers provide educational supports and strategies for every child

Remediation

When a child is expected to have a solid understanding of material but has not yet mastered it, they may need remediation. Remediation allows us to focus on specific areas of learning and “close the gaps” through focused and targeted teaching.

Enrichment

Many children are not succeeding to their full potential because they are bored, not interested in the material, or are simply not being challenged enough. We offer individualized teaching for kids who are looking to be challenged, or who want to explore a particular subject in more depth.

Homework Support

Homework can be stressful and exhausting for families and children alike. Our teachers help students who struggle to complete homework, who need help understanding the material, and who require strategies and support with assignments.

Traditional Tutoring

Many kids don't have complex learning profiles, but they need a little extra support and practice. Our certified teachers work with kids who need an extra boost, help studying, help with test prep, and have questions about the material they are working on in the classroom.

Academic Assessment

Initial academic assessments provide us with the information needed to properly identify your child’s learning profile. Ongoing observations and assessments by our qualified teachers ensure that we are responsive and flexible as your child grows.

Advocacy and Parent Support

Advocating for your child’s needs can be stressful and exhausting, especially when navigating the school system. We are here to help you and your child as you navigate their learning journey.

Are we a good fit for your child?

Are we a good fit for your child?

Our Approach

Holistic

A holistic approach to education seeks to fully utilize and acknowledge all aspects of an individual to facilitate learning. This means that a child’s intellect, emotions, imagination, interests, strengths, and kinetic needs are all honored and utilized to maximize learning.

Psychologically Safe Environment

Psychological safety means that an individual can be themselves without fear of judgment or negative response. At Helix, we respect our students and accept them for who they are without judgment. Our students are free to be themselves regardless of their learning needs, sexual orientation, gender identity, race, or religion.

Flexible Teaching Strategies

Not every strategy works for every student. What has worked for a child in the past may not work for them in the future. Our teachers continuously adapt to the needs of students while following best teaching practices rooted in research and science.

Trained and Certified Teachers

Our certified teachers utilize a wide range of teaching strategies. Whether your child is gifted, delayed, on the Spectrum, diagnosed with a learning disability, ADHD, an English Language Learner, or simply a unique learner, our teachers have the skills and experience to help your child learn and succeed in a positive and fun environment.

Benefits

Positive Relationship with Learning

Many non-traditional learners find school difficult and stressful. We seek to change that association and help students see themselves as capable learners. At Helix, we customize our lessons to meet the interests and abilities of each child so that learning is engaging and fun.

Comprehensive Support

For students with complex learning needs, we use a collaborative team approach to ensure your child is getting the best support possible. We can partner and refer you to a variety of specialists to offer additional support when you need it. Our partners commonly help in areas of speech and language pathology, occupational therapy, behavioral consultation, or simply managing anxiety.  We work with your child’s support team to streamline goals and support your child’s learning.

Solid Foundational Skills

Foundational skills are the skills that future learning is based upon. Students with a strong foundation have the knowledge and confidence to make learning easier and more meaningful in the future.

Helix Origin

Jared Webb

Jared’s passion for working with children was firmly established during his time managing a group home for at-risk youth and working in a youth addiction program. Having already completed a BA in Psychology and a Masters in international relations with a focus on the role of education in economic and societal development, Jared went back to school to get his BEd in elementary education.  He spent the next 4 years working in Alberta as a classroom teacher and as an inclusion coach supporting children with disabilities.

Now, as an Ontario teacher Jared has continued his own educational journey by getting additional qualifications in Special Education, Teaching English Language Learners, First Nations Metis and Inuit Studies, and Teaching Students with Communication Needs (ASD). He is also certified in mental health first aid, suicide awareness and prevention, and non-violent crisis intervention. Jared has completed training in the Orton Gillingham method at the associate level.  As a founder and teacher at Helix Learning, Jared is able to combine his experience and passion for education to teach, support, and advocate for his students.

Heather Connor

Originally from the U.S, Heather came to Canada in 2003 after graduating from The University of Colorado.  When her children developed complex and mysterious medical symptoms, she gave up her career as a Territory Manager for a surgical device company to focus on getting them a diagnosis and treatment.  After her boy’s diagnosis of dystonia, a rare neurological movement disorder, Heather began her journey as an advocate.

In 2014, she started integrating writing into her advocacy work. Her personal essays and short stories can be found in numerous publications such as The Huffington Post, ScaryMommy, The Mighty, Kidsspot and more.  In 2016, Heather joined the Board of Directors of the Canadian Dystonia Medical Research Foundations where she served four years.  When one of her sons was diagnosed with autism and the other with learning disabilities, Heather’s advocacy work expanded into the world of education. Now as a founder at Helix Learning she loves working with students, families and professionals to support and advocate for all children’s right to learn.

— WHAT'S IN A NAME?

Why Helix?

In nature, obstacles do not impede growth. Plant roots twist and coil until they find an unobstructed path. Above ground, vines and creeping plants grow in circles around anything in their way. This helical growth pattern creates strength and stability for the plant, allowing it to grow far beyond what would have otherwise been possible. This is an important analogy for learning and encompasses how we feel about education. Learning does not need to take a linear path. Sometimes a different approach needs to be found in order for children to navigate obstacles so they can succeed and grow. In the end, new paths can produce stronger results and higher achievement.
